  • LORL internships provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student to work and learn in a non-partisan research agency of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
  • LORL internships enable students to take education beyond the classroom and into the practitioner's world.
  • LORL internships give students first-hand understanding of the legislative process and provide professional training and experience in research, oral and written communication, and interpersonal relationships designed to complement principles and theory learned in the classroom.
  • Interns work on a full-time or part-time basis in our office.
  • In most cases interns receive a stipend. Paid internships must be credit-bearing learning experiences approved by the interns' academic institutions.

LORL Interns

Interns
  • Assist LORL Research Analysts in a variety of activities including research, bill analysis, data interpretation, etc.
  • Serve as research assistants to LORL's Visiting Scholars on specific projects.
  • Observe and work with state employees in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches to gain understanding of the processes of government.
  • Attend LORL staff meetings, legislative floor sessions, and hearings.
  • Help organize and attend LORL policy workshops and conferences for legislators.
  • Participate with the LORL staff on intermediate to long-term research activities.
  • Conduct bibliographic, internet and other searches.
  • Learn about technical information gathering and dissemination activities from initiation to implementation.
  • Visit various legislative and executive offices to develop an understanding of the interdependence of state government.

Successful Applicants

  • Must be adept at communications.
  • Have the ability to interact effectively with persons from wideranging backgrounds and diverse political persuasions.
  • Have a working knowledge of the Pennsylvania legislative process.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and to work in a non-partisan environment.
  • Must demonstrate the ability, either through college courses or through work experience, to deal with highly technical public policy issues that draw on knowledge from the life, physical, and/or social sciences.
  • Must be computer literate and have internet experience.
  • Must obtain college credit for the internship.
  • Must be available during office hours of 9:00AM - 4:30PM.

Other Highlights

  • Undergraduate and graduate students from any field may apply.
  • A minimum "B" average overall or in the major field is highly desirable, but not mandatory.
  • All interns must be residents of the Commonwealth or attending a college or university within the Commonwealth. Preference is given to applicants from colleges and universities that belong to the LORL Academic Network.
  • Full-time or part-time placements are available, but the duration of an internship and the number of working hours in a typical week can vary to meet the student's and/or university's needs.
